More than a single skill, this is about two related abilities: generating valuable new ideas, and connecting the dots and seeing links between concepts, domains, and experiences that others miss.
Generating valuable ideas
Valuable ideas often come from combining existing knowledge in new ways, or from noticing gaps, inefficiencies, or unmet needs. They require:
- Exposure to diverse inputs: different domains, people, and problems
- Space for reflection: time to let ideas surface and develop
- A bias toward action: testing ideas quickly instead of overthinking
Connecting the dots
Connecting the dots means spotting relationships between seemingly unrelated things. It builds on:
- Breadth of knowledge: the more dots you have, the more connections you can make
- Curiosity and pattern recognition: asking "what if this relates to that?"
- Cross-domain thinking: applying mental models from one field to another
How to develop it
- Read and explore widely across domains
- Keep notes and revisit them; connections often emerge over time
- Discuss ideas with others; conversation surfaces new angles
- Build small things; implementation forces clarity and reveals gaps
